Our video today is brought to us by The Hillside Project - a pseudonym of composer and pianist Josh Hill. Originally a solo piano work, Iridescences has been arranged by Sam Gale for an ensemble of strings, piano and synthesiser that features on the newly released 'The Available Light'. With the composer at the keys, this recording comes from the live premier of the album in September at the St Matthias Church in London.

Since their inception in the middle part of the 20th century, synthesisers have had a unique relationship with classical music - many still associate them purely with popular and rock music of the 1970s and 80s. Some may know the work of Wendy Carlos and her numerous (now considered revolutionary) 'Switched on Bach' albums of Bach arranged for synthesiser used in the soundtrack to the 1971 Stanley Kubrick film The Clockwork Orange. Or even avant-garde composer Karlheinz Stockhausen who championed the medium with synthesisers appearing in many of his works; his grand operatic cycle Licht and many of his Klavierstücke to name but a few.
